Officials said on Friday that amidst heavy rains in Uttarakhand, two Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel drowned in a swelling lake in Bhimatal.

Prince Yadav (22) of Pathankot, Punjab and Sahil Kumar (23), from Muzaffarpur in Bihar, had part of a group of eight IAF personnel, including four women, who were holidaying in Nainel, said circle officer Pramod Shah.

He said that the local people joined the police in the rescue operation and lasted for about an hour to get Yadav and Kumar’s bodies out of the lake.

The rains that have occurred in the state, with the closure of more than a hundred roads across the state, has affected daily life, which disrupts the Chardham Yatra and caused lack of food in some villages in the Gith area of ​​Uttarkashi district.

Officials said that the road to Kedarnath is also blocked due to landslide debris between Sonprayag and Gaurikund, causing agitation between two points to be impossible, the authorities said they have been asked to reopen them.

Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday to assess the situation in the disaster-sensitive districts of the state, which included Kedarnath Dham in Rudraprayag district.

Dhami shared this development in a post on X, stating that the Home Minister assured him that emergency relief agencies of the central government including NDRF and ITBP are being deployed immediately. It is to ensure that the Chardham Yatra is uninterrupted and that devotees do not experience any inconvenience while traveling.

On Friday morning, Bolders also blocked the Badrinath Highway at several places.

The state’s emergency operation center said that a total of 109 roads are closed in the hill state due to rain -related obstacles.

Officials said that Ganga, Alakanand, Nandkini, Nandkini and Pindar in Haridwar, Bhagirathi in Uttarkashi and Ghori and Saryu rivers in Pithorgarh districts, flowing at a few meters below the danger mark, Gori and Saryu rivers flowing a few meters below the danger mark.

The water of a lake constituted by the Yamuna River, an overflow in Sianachatti in the Barcot region of Uttarkashi, has begun to submerge its banks, homes and hotels located close to the state.

Barcot SDM Brijesh Tiwari said he visited the lake to assess the situation, and an excavant was brought to the removal of silt and opening the lake outlet.

Efforts are also being made to reopen the Yamunotri highway, which has been dissolved in many places including Ojri and Banas. The prolonged dissolution of this route has caused the lack of food grain in the villages of the Gith region, inspiring the local people to urge the officials to address the issue.

Local social activist Mahavir Panwar Mahi said, “Necessary steps should be taken by the administration to provide food and other essential items to the affected villages.”

In Dehradun, the roads are heavy waterfalls in the roundabouts near Prince Chalk and Doon Hospital, where blocked drains and overflow sewer chambers have added to the crises of office and school children.
Officials said that similar weather conditions are likely to be strong in various districts of the state for the next few days.
