Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Saturday directed the state DGP to conduct a thorough investigation into the death of Romita Hozai, an Assamese woman in Uttarakhand after his Assam’s counterpart, Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The Uttarakhand police admitted that death was a case of suicide. Hozai (25) in Dima Hasao district of Assam was found dead on the banks of the Ganges River in Rishikesh on Tuesday, five days after the information about the disappearance on 6 June.
According to his family, he traveled to Delhi to appear for the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) examination, after which he traveled to Rishikesh with two persons.
Muni’s Raiti police station’s SHO, Sub-Inspector Yogesh Pandey, where the body was found, said that the post-mortem report said that the cause of the death was due to the drowning and no external injuries have been found.
“The woman was preparing for a competitive exam and had a poor performance. Two of her friends who had gone to Rishikesh with her said that she was distressed. We investigated it with her family, and it seemed true. Prima Feshi, it’s a case of suicide. However, if we are asked to invest again, we would investigate.”

On Tuesday, Sarma wrote that Dhami requested to investigate the matter, expressing concern about the possible dishonesty game.
“In view of the gravity of the case and the deep suffering being experienced by his family, I request your kind intervention to ensure that the case is investigated from a broad and wide and periodically, all possible angles are examined. If any criminal participation is found, I request that the responsible persons are identified, assured and prosecution, so that the law is given.
