Iran has opened its airspace for India, allowing New Delhi to bring back around 1,000 Indian students under Operation Indus as tension is increasing in the Middle East.

On Wednesday, the Government of India officially started Operation Sindhu to vacate its citizens from Iran. The Ministry of External Affairs (Mea) confirmed that 110 Indian students from Northern Iran were successfully rescued from across the border in Armenia on 17 June. These students were taken to Yervan, the Armenian capital under the supervision of Indian diplomatic missions.

Operation Sindhu was launched by Indian students after reporting injuries during a strike at a medical student hostel in Kesharjwarz Street area of ​​Tehran. Officials of the Iranian Embassy in Delhi confirmed that the Iranian Foreign Ministry was in close contact with the Indian mission in Tehran after the incident.

In an earlier statement, Mea emphasized the focus of the Government of India on the good of its citizens abroad. “India gives the top priority for the safety and safety of Indian citizens abroad. As part of the ongoing operation, the Indian embassy in Iran is assisting a large number of Indian citizens, which is helping to move forward from areas watching enmity in relatively safe areas within the country and to evacuate them using the available and viable options.”

The MEA thanked both Iran and Armenia, which was for their cooperation in facilitating withdrawal efforts.

Indian citizens in Iran have been advised to stay connected with the Indian Embassy in Tehran through their emergency helpline and coordinate with the 24 × 7 control room established by Mea in New Delhi.
