Tripura has obtained “complete literacy”, with a literacy rate of 95.6 percent, Chief Minister Manik Saha on Monday announced on Monday to learn life for lifetime.
“This is a historical moment. We have been recognized as a completely literate state. It is a matter of pride for us. Those who worked tirelessly -I thanks all those who worked to the education department, teachers and students. I thank them all. Saba Saath, Saba Vikas, Saba Prayer. We need to go to the last mile.
Saha said that the state recorded a literacy rate of 20.24 percent in 1961, from where it reached 60.44 percent in 1991, 73.19 percent in 2001 and 87.22 percent in 2011. In 2023-24, the literacy rate increased by 93.7 percent in 2024-25 to 95.6 percent.

The literacy program was limited to teaching people how to write their names, but its attention has expanded to include foundation literacy and numerical, reading, writing, original arithmetic, important life skills, business skills, sustainable education and skill development, Saha said.
The Chief Minister said, “Literacy needs to reach every house. If it is not complete, we cannot reach our destination. I will ask the Education Department to address those who have been left,” the Chief Minister said.
He said, “Tripura is progressing in every field. If we talk about GSDP (gross state domestic product), we are the second largest in the Northeast after Assam. We have the second biggest income after Sikkim,” he said.
2,228 volunteers are part of the literacy program across the state, supported by 943 society Chetana Kendras.
Of the 4,597 candidates, 3,581 passed the Foundation literacy and numerical assessment test held on 17 March last year. When the test was held on 29 December last year, 13,909 out of 14,179 candidates were eligible. The test was re -conducted on 23 March and 5,819 of 5,896 candidates approved it.
