High score in India graphic health warning, termination ban: global tobacco use on WHO report | Bharat News

He explained that the rate of smoking among adults was lower than the use of smoking tobacco. In children of the age of 13–15 years (Global Youth Tobacco Survey -2019), eight percent are using tobacco with a slight difference between boys and girls.

Where India stands

Meanwhile, India has banned smoking in all indoor public places, but still allows 30 or more to designate the smoking room in restaurants/drinking facilities/night clubs with the ability to sit in airports and hotels.

Dr Prasad said that on the ˋW ‘measure, India has been in the highest group since 2016. Large illustrated warnings (85 percent) are required on tobacco product packages and India should also consider adopting plain packaging.

On the ‘E’ measure, India has banned direct and indirect tobacco advertisements, promotion and sponsorship. However, there is no restriction on the sale of the Internet and India should ban advertising of tobacco products at fully selling points, the expert urged. The WHO report also warned that action is required to maintain and intensify progress in tobacco control as the growing industry intervention challenges challenges to tobacco policies and control efforts.

India has implemented strict measures to curb tobacco advertisements, promotion and sponsorship (TAPS) in all forms of media including television, radio, print and digital platforms. To restrict the depiction of tobacco use in entertainment media, the Center introduced tobacco-free films and television rules in 2012, focusing on traditional platforms such as cinema and television.

As more people shift towards using digital streaming platforms, India recognized the need to update its tobacco control policies. Incidentally with World No Tobacco Day on 31 May, 2023, the government began amending the 2012 law, which expanded its coverage to over-the-top streaming platforms. With the move, India became the first country in the world to implement tobacco control rules, especially for digital streaming materials.

The WHO report stated that India is strengthening its commitment to public health and positioning itself as a leader in adopting regulation to develop media consumption trends. However, the current national tap ban can be further strengthened by restricting tobacco advertisements at sales points and completely banning tobacco industry sponsorship.

Despite reducing tobacco prices, the use of tobacco is the least MPover measure, which is the most effective and efficient way to reduce the use of tobacco. In India, according to the report, cigarettes are still cheap. In 2024, only 15 percent of the world’s population living in 40 countries was preserved by 75 percent or the most popular brand of cigarette.
