As a result, in view of the legal opinion, for the first time, a letter was sent by the PMML administration to Sonia Gandhi’s office earlier this year, seeking a return of papers for scholars and historians.

This was the first time in an official communication for the Gandhi family by the museum administration, Sonia Gandhi recorded about taking part of the papers from Nehru collection, which she donated to the museum decades ago.

Sources said that there was no response from Gandhi’s office. In this regard, sources said that it was discussed that the matter should be legally pushed forward, saying that once a donation or gift papers cannot be withdrawn, and therefore, they remain the property of the organization and should be handed back to its custody.

A source said that it was also placed on the AGM that the matter was related to 2008 (during the UPA rule), and the organization was now demanding more legal opinion in the matter demanding correcting the administrative leakon of the pre -2014 era and how it can be carried forward.

The issue of reclaiming a part of the private letters donated by the Gandhi family to the Sonia Gandhi’s issue was discussed in detail in the AGM held on February 13, 2024, chaired by Rajnath Singh, in which Sitarman and Pradhan also participated among other members.

There was an idea among the members that those papers should be called back, and a general consensus was also reached to get legal opinion on issues such as “ownership, mentor, copyright, and use of these archival collections”, as Indira Gandhi was donated to the organization in 1971 and later as Sonia Gandhi.

The case came to discuss the 47th AGM as a follower of the final AGM discussions. According to sources, the initial legal opinion indicates that the ownership of the papers is with the museum, even the case needs to be carried forward on their return.

On January 15 this year, the PMML Society and Executive Council were reorganized along with the former Principal Secretary of the Prime Minister, NRPndra Mishra, who got another five -year term as the chairman of the organization. Former Union Minister Smriti Irani, former Niti Ayog Vice President Rajiv Kumar, retired Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain, filmmaker Shekhar Kapoor and Vasudev Kamath of Sanskar Bharti were many new entries.

According to PMML records, the papers rectified by Sonia Gandhi in 2008 include Nehru and Jayaprakash Narayan, Edwina Mountbatten, Albert Einstein, Aruna Asaf Ali, Vijaya Laxmi Pandit and Babu Jagajwan Ram.

The AGM on Monday, the Prime Minister also put forward the concept of making a museum map of India, and suggested the development of a comprehensive national database of all museums in the country.
