“The North Central Naval Command saw a group of Indian fishing boats entangled in illegal fishing, which was entering Sri Lankan water in the early hours today. In response, the North Central Navy command deployed its Indian fishing boats to remove the Indian fishing boats from the island water, which are north of Maannar.”

Fishermen from both India and Sri Lanka are often arrested for inadvertently torturing each other.

The issue of fishermen is a controversial in relations between India and Sri Lanka, in which the Lankan Navy personnel also fired on Indian fishermen in pock straight and seized their boats in several alleged incidents of illegally entering the island nation.

Pock Strait, a narrow strip of water separating Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka, is a rich fishing ground for fishermen from both countries.
