The Maharashtra Congress leadership, who met in the national capital on Monday, decided to emphasize the upcoming Mumbai Civic Body Poll for the party contesting in itself.

This leaves the top brass of the Congress with a difficult decision to potentially leave its Maha Vikas Aghdi (MVA) colleagues, Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (Sharad Pawar).

However, the party could get a decision for this – in January, the Shiv Sena (UBT) indicated that it would choose the civil elections on its own.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections will be held later this year or early 2026.

The meeting was attended by the party’s Maharashtra in -charge Ramesh Chennithla, Rajya Sabha member and general secretary Mukul Wasnik, former state unit chief Nana Patol and Rajni Patil attended other leaders.

Sources present in the meeting told The Indian Express The leaders suggested that the party should contest the BMC elections alone.
A source said, “While the final decision regarding the alliance will be made by the high command, we decided that if we go alone it would be better for the party,” a source said, a formal announcement is likely to come on 7 July.

Congress leaders feel that if citizen fights as part of MVA, the party will lose more land in Mumbai. The party won 75 seats in the 2007 BMC pole, 56 in 2012 and 31 in the last elections in 2017.

“Faming the BMC elections helps the party to form an organization and leadership. We are a national party and cannot take the risk of losing land in Mumbai,” said the above source.

At Monday’s meeting, the leaders also discussed the reorganization of last year’s assembly elections along with the Congress organization in Maharashtra.

The MVA, which includes Congress, NCP (SP) and Shiv Sena (UBT), made a poor show in the elections, winning just 46 seats. Shiv Sena (UBT) won 20 seats, Congress 16 and NCP-SP won 10.
