In Ghana, PM Modi says that the global order after World War II is changing rapidly, calls for 'reliable' reforms for governance

PM Modi Ghana Yatra: The global order created after World War II was changing rapidly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday that the changing circumstances demand “reliable and effective reforms in global rule”.

Addressing Ghana’s Parliament, Modi said that revolution in technology, global South growth and shifting demographics are contributing to the pace and scale of this change.

He also announced that India has decided to elevate relations for “comprehensive partnership” with the African nation. “We support Africa’s development structure to secure a bright and durable future … Together, we will shape the future with promises and progress,” Modi told Ghaniya MPs.

Modi also dedicated Ghana’s national honor, to honor him a day earlier, to bear the values ​​that bind both countries.

In his address, Modi underlined that the people of India have resolved to make the country a developed nation by 2047 and said that a strong India would contribute to a more stable and rich world.

This is Modi’s first bilateral visit to Ghana, and he has thus become the first Indian PM to visit the country in three decades. Ghana President John Mahama visited India in 2015 for the India-Africa Forum Summit.

Earlier in the day, the PM dedicated the founder president of Ghana at the Quame Nakramah Memorial Park, a revered leader of the African freedom movement.

PM Modi was accompanied by Ghana Vice President, Professor Nana Jane Opoku-Eggmang, as he first laid a wreath at the memorial of the Prime Minister and later on the first President of the West African nation. The Prime Minister also saw a moment of silence in honor of Nakramah’s “permanent contribution to freedom, unity and social justice”.

Why Ghana is important

The country, one of the fastest growing economies in West Africa, strengthens and expands trade relations with India. Most of Ghana’s shipments reach Indian coasts with gold accounting for more than 70% of India’s imports from Ghana.
