One woman was killed and two others were injured when a building block of Government Medical College Hospital in Kottayam, Kerala fell on Thursday. The deceased was identified as a 56 -year -old Bindu, a resident of Thaloleprambu in Kottayam district, who was in a hospital for his daughter.

Health Minister Veena George and Minister of Cooperation VN Vasavan, who were in the city, claimed that his death as rescue operations expressed displeasure as the building was not used and was not denied to reject the possibilities of the people buried under the rubble.

The accident occurred at around 11 am when the washroom area of ​​the 14th ward of the hospital collapsed. Fire and Rescue Services reached the spot and rescued two people from minor injuries.

The minister was in Kottayam to attend a regional review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. After the collapse of the building, the minister reached the spot and told the media that the collapsed area was closed and was not in use. Both George and Vasavan dismissed the possibility of more people getting trapped under the rubble and repeatedly stated that it was a closed part used for waste disposal.

Around 1 pm, rescue teams resumed the search operations when Bindu’s daughter Navami repeatedly raised the alarm on her missing mother. Nawami, under treatment, said that her mother had gone to the washroom, but was not participating in the call. Although the rescue teams got caught in the rubble and pulled him out, after two hours of the collapse of the building, he later died in the same hospital.

The perspective of the ministers has staged extensive protests from the opposition Congress and the BJP.

Chandy Oman, Congress MLA, who arrived at the scene from Puthappali constituency in Kottayam, who reached the spot after the incident, said that there was a delay in rescue due to the irresponsible statements made by the ministers. “He tried to play the issue, saying that the collapsed part was a closed area,” he said.

Later, George said that the District Collector was asked to examine any possible laps, given that the collapsed building was 68 years old.

He said, “There was no delay in rescue efforts. The death of the statement is unfortunate, and we have done everything possible. I reacted on the basis of the information obtained. I had difficulties to achieve the proposer of the earth at the place,” he told the media.
