Why is Muharram important in Islam?
Muharram marked the beginning of the Islamic New Year, which was marked on the 10th day of Muharram on July 6, 2025 (Sunday) as the date of Ashura. This is the first month of the Islamic calendar and one of the holiest time for Muslims. The day is marked by prayer, religious ceremonies and mourning processions by the Muslim community.

On the 10th day, called Ashura, especially important for Shia Muslims. It remembers the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who died in the battle of Karbala in 680 AD.
Are banks open or closed on 7 July?
Banks across India were shut down at the end of this week, on Saturday, Guru Hargobind ji’s birthday and a compulsory weekly on Sunday – in addition to seven listed bank holidays in July this year, as nominated by RBI.
According to the RBI calendar for 2025, Banks in India will work as usual, with no holidays for Monday, July 7, 2025.
The RBI lists bank holidays based on national and local opportunities, operational requirements, religious ceremonies and other cultural observations.
Customers should be aware that despite the holidays, internet banking services normally work on bank holidays.

School calendar and CBSE holiday list for July 2025
Most schools in India reopen in early July after summer vacation in June. In northern states like Uttar Pradesh, classes have already started. Apart from Muharram, there are no major holidays in early July. CBSE has released 2025–26 academic calendar, including national festivals, regional programs and holidays for seasonal brakes.
