Pay special attention to elderly prisoners in jails: Center for Center, UTS | Bharat News

The Center has asked the chief secretaries of all states, center states (UTS) and heads of jails to pay additional attention to the diet plans of elderly prisoners, and ensure that adequate health facilities including mental health services are provided to them.

In a letter on 1 July, Arun Sobit, director of jail reforms, said that many weak prisoners have been included in the jails, including elderly persons, who often require special support and support to manage their daily activities in custody.

“As you know, the Center is committed to create a ecosystem to protect, care and provide for the good of its elderly citizens. Keeping this common objective in mind, states and UTS are requested to see the provisions appropriate for special/accessible housing in jails and suitable provisions for corrective institutions.

Sobit said that it is expected that the state and UTS will take appropriate measures to implement all recommendations for the welfare of elderly prisoners.

He said, “Special attention can be paid to the dietary requirements of such elderly prisoners, with food plans, according to the challenges of advanced age,” he said.

He said, “It can also be ensured that adequate health facilities including mental health services – are provided in jails to meet the special needs of elderly prisoners. Jail staff can also be appropriately sensitive/ abbreviated about this aspect,” he said.
