Police on Monday killed five members of a family on suspicion of witchcraft in Purnia district of Bihar. Police said the victims were also burnt, and they were investigating whether they were alive or were set on fire after death.
The incident took place on Sunday night in Tetgama village under the jurisdiction of Mufassil police station in Rajiganj. While three persons have been arrested, police said that many people of the village could attend.
“It is an Oraon community village in which most villagers belong to the tribal group.
Sharma said that a 16 -year -old boy of the family, who was away at a relative’s house during the attack, informed the police first. He said, “He has accused the participation of the entire village and identified four main accused, three of whom have been arrested,” he said.
He said that a special team has been formed to nab the remaining suspects. Sharma said, “Four names have been mentioned in the FIR, three have been arrested, but indications are coming out that the entire village may be included. The raids are going on to catch the remaining accused and we are also investigating to investigate any further participation,” Sharma said.

The SDPO stated that preliminary investigation suggests that the attack could begin with a dispute on “Jhad-Fuq” (traditional treatment practices). “Prima Feshi, it appears that the phenomenon was started with a controversy over traditional treatment practices or perceived witchcraft. Babu Lal Oran’s family, who practiced such rituals, is believed to have been targeted after a child of Ramdev Oran’s family and another fell.
He said that exact circumstances of deaths are still being determined.

After the incident, RJD leader Tejashvi Yadav took an X to target NDA government -led NDA government. He said, “In Purnia, five members of the same family were alive and killed. Due to DK Kar, unrighteousness in Bihar is at its peak, DGP/Chief Secretary is helpless, and the law and order have collapsed,” he said in a post.
“Before yesterday in Siwan, three people were killed in a massacre. In recent times, all three were killed in Buxar. In Bhojpur, three people were massacred. The criminals are on alert mode and the Chief Minister is unconscious!
Purnia’s independent Lok Sabha MP, Rajesh Ranjan said in a post on X: “I feel ashamed. The world has reached Mars and our people are involved in the massacre on suspicion of witchcraft!”
Condemning the incident, Bihar Congress chief Rajesh Kumar said, “I have to say that people in the state, especially poor, Dalits and socially marginalized are not safe. It is called Jungle-Raj.
