Every evening, Patna -based businessman Gopal Khemka followed an familiar routine. Around 8 pm, he would leave his house in Kataruka Newas, which was located between the hotel Panche and Hotel Maurya in the Upskel South Gandhi Maidan area, and will drive 1.8 kilometers at Bankipur Club. A director and former secretary of the social club, Khamka, spent late evening with friends, left a companion in Bakarganj before returning home till 11 pm.

Patna Police, alerted by the hospital, first went there and later at the crime site, where a bullet and a shell cover were found.

On 7 July, the police arrested the alleged shooter, Umesh Yadav at his house. “Using CCTV footage and technical analysis, we discovered the bike route for Yadav’s residence,” said Patna SSP Karthikeya Sharma. The bike number plate was tampered with, but a discovery caused recovery of clothes, shoes and masks. Sharma said, “Under strict inquiries, Yadav confesses the crime.” “He revealed that the gun was hidden in his brother’s flat. We recovered weapons, two magazines with 14 rounds and 59 additional round ammunition.”

Yadav nominated Patna businessman Ashok Sao as an alleged mastermind, claiming that the SAO hired him as a contract killer. Sao has also been arrested. “He met at a wedding in Bihar Sharif a year and a half ago,” Sharma said. “Yadav had been running small tasks for SAO since then. About six weeks ago, he allegedly planned to kill Khemka.”

Sharma said, “Sao sour her (her and Khemka) business relations on a land dispute.”

Initially, Yadav was assigned to find a shooter and weapon, in which Rs. 3.5 lakh more. However, another suspect in the case, Vikas alias Raja demanded more money, after which Yadav himself acted. Sharma said, “Sao allegedly provided guns and informed Yadav on the routine of Bankipur club in Khemka.”

On July 4, Yadav scouts the club, followed Khemka’s car, and shot him at his gate, causing his vehicle and registration number.

The next day, as gathered to pay the honor in the office of the bereavers, Yadav met Sao on the JP Ganga Path to collect the remaining Rs 3.5 lakh. “SAO bought a phone and SIM in the name of Yadav,” Sharma said. “Yadav returned the phone but kept the SIM.” The raid on Sao’s house exposed land documents, weapons, ammunition and Rs 6.5 lakh cash, while Yadav’s house was found to be Rs 3.65 lakh.

Bihar’s DGP Vinay Kumar said, “Since many land related documents have been recovered from the SAO’s house, we are investigating what is the reason why the dispute between him and Khemka. We will investigate the equipment and victory equipment. We indicate between the two, we will meet.”

Bihar ADG Kundan Krishnan said, “We have concrete evidence to commission it against Khemka and Sao against the shooter.”

Krishnan also said that Sao’s name has come in some other cases in the past, and before they have been questioned by the police.

In 2018, DGP Kumar said that four people were arrested in that case. “Chargesheet was presented. Gopal Khemka was a complainant. An hearing was held in 2022, and the second hearing was scheduled for July 15, 2025. The chief shooter has been killed in the incident, and hence the complainant (Khemka). We will investigate to find out if there is a link.”

Another suspect in Khemka’s murder, Vikas, was shot dead in a police encounter on Tuesday morning. Patna Ig Jitendra Rana said, “Vikas was involved in murder and other shooting cases, and his history revealed that he supplied illegal weapons and ammunition for such incidents. His name also came in relation to the case, and we got information about a weapon by the shooter (Umesh). A police team asked him to print herfidence.

Police said they had recovered a pistol and cartridge from the spot.
