On Thursday, the apex court refused to continue the special intensive amendment (SIR) process of EC in Bihar, but said “it was leaving the EC to consider its suggestion on inclusion of these three documents” and “If you have good reasons to abandon it, leave it” but “give”. Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Joymlya Bagchi will listen to the matter again on 28 July.

One of the petitioners, TMC MP Mahua Motra, posted on X: “Thanks to the Supreme Court for the inclusion of common, epics and ration cards as valid documents for any voter roll amendment. Thank you to be clear, the Supreme Court has not given any direction on the matter.

In Bihar, parties from both sides of the corridor supported the Supreme Court’s suggestion for three documents in addition to the currently accepted for the drive in the pole-bound state.

Jha told The Indian Express that the message of the Supreme Court was clear. “SC comments show that the concerns of ordinary Biharis have reached court … We believe that these three additional documents should be included in the EC, especially Aadhaar, which has the most widespread access in Bihar. JD (U) chief spokesperson Neeraj Kumar said: “Whatever measures ECI takes, our primary concern is that real voters are not left in the updated electoral role.” Another JD (U) spokesperson, Rajiv Ranjan, said that SC’s decision proved that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and RJD leader Tejashvi Yadav on Wednesday through their Bihar bandh “failed to create psychological pressure” in the Supreme Court.
