Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday welcomed the inclusion of ‘Maratha Military Landscapes’, which included 12 forts of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
In a post on X, Modi said that the magnificent Maratha Empire is associated with good governance, military strength and cultural pride, and that this honor has made every Indian rejoiced.
He urged everyone to visit these forts and learn about the rich history of the Maratha Empire.
“Every Indian has rejoiced with this honor,” he said, “When we talk about the magnificent Maratha Empire, we emphasize it on good governance, military power, cultural pride and social welfare. His attitude to bow down to us for any injustice inspires us.

Maharashtra Vice President Devendra Fadnavis was also included, called it a “proud and magnificent moment” for the state.
In a post on X, Fadnavis said, “The Maharashtra government gives a salute to our beloved Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj! Hearty congratulations to all citizens and Shiva devotees of Maharashtra.”

Fadnavis also thanked PM Modi and his colleagues in their efforts to include forts in the UNESCO list for their support and active participation.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said that development was of immense historical and cultural significance, and was a matter of great pride for the state.
These forts, including the Gingi Fort in Tamil Nadu, stand as a symbol of the valor, sacrifice and vision of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Maratha warriors. Now, his legacy will be global visibility and recognized, he said.
What is ‘Maratha military landscape’?
The Maratha military landscapes include 12 forts of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, including the forts of Saller, Shivneri, Lohgad, Khanderi, Rayagad, Rajagad, Pratapgad, Suvarnagurg, Bhiyanla, Vijay Durg and Indhudhurga.
The decision to include them was taken on Friday (July 11) during the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC) held in Paris. It is the 44th property of India to get recognized.

Regarding the latest addition of the World Heritage List, the Ministry of Culture stated that it reflects India’s permanent cultural heritage and highlights the country’s architectural talent, regional identity and diverse traditions of historical continuity.
