Supreme Court agrees to hear the ‘Udaipur Files’ manufacturer’s petition against Delhi HC order on the film

The Supreme Court agreed to hear “in a day or two” on Monday, on the release of a film Udaipur files challenging the Delhi High Court order: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Killing on the basis of the crime committed by the alleged Islamic fundamentalists in the city in Rajasthan.

The order of the Delhi High Court came on a petition of Maulana Arshad Madani, Principal of Darul Uloom Deoband and others. He said that the film based on the murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor by the alleged Islamic fundamentalists in 2022, is “full of dialogues and examples, which led to communal disagreement in recent times and thus preventing every capacity again the same communal sentiments”.

The Division Bench of Chief Justice DK Upadhyay and Justice Anish Dayal again accused the Central Government to review the CBFC’s decision to give the petitioner a certificate of green-lighting to the central government for the release of the film.

The HC-directed migration will be operational until the Center decides on the application for interim relief that Madni can request, including suspension from the film’s exhibition. According to the time-limit directed by the court, HC-directed migration can then be from 14 July to 21 July.

The CBFC informed the High Court that the film had already made 55 cuts that it directed to include the producers. The Center also argued that the film is not community-specific, but “crime-specific”.

Kanhaiya Lal was allegedly hacked by Mohammad Riyaz and Ghosh Mohammed at their shop in Udaipur on June 28, 2022, on a post shared by him on social media in support of suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, who made some comments about the Prophet during a live television debate.
