Health Ministry Samosa, Jalebi issues clarification on 'warning label'

The Union Health Ministry on Tuesday clarified that it has not issued any instructions for a warning label on popular snacks such as samosas or jalebis.

In a statement, the ministry said that recent media reports claim that otherwise “are misleading, wrong and baseless”.

According to the official statement issued by the Press Information Bureau (Paib), The Ministry has not directed any food labeling mandate for such items. Instead, a general advice was issued to promote healthy dietary options in workplaces through “oil and sugar boards” – a room meeting to increase awareness about hidden fat and additional sugar in the canteen, lobby, boards kept in cafeteria and various foods.

The ministry said, “These boards serve as a behavioral elite about hidden fat and additional sugar in various food products.”

It is further mentioned that the advisor is a general behavioral elite, which aims to educate people about dietary risks in all food groups – not singing traditional or local cuisine.

The initiative comes under the national program for prevention and control of non-communicable diseases (NP-NCDs), which addresses health issues related to excessive consumption of oil and sugar, such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and other lifestyle related diseases.
