The Union Health Ministry on Tuesday drawn a lot of draws for the selection of 24 part -time members of the National Medical Commission (NMC) and its four autonomous boards.
The previous appointments of part -time members took place in December 2022 for a period of two years; The posts were lying vacant for at least six months.
However, the status of full -time members, including the post of presidents of three of the four autonomous boards, has remained vacant for about nine months.
The Center has Dr. Appointed Abhijeet Sheth, who is currently going to the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences, who conducts the entrance exam for PG and Superspeciality Medical Courses, as the Chairman of NMC over the weekend.
According to the rules, 10 part -time members for the Commission are selected from the nominees of the states and center areas.

Members named by Gujarat, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Jharkhand, Chandigarh and Madhya Pradesh were selected through a lot of draws.
One of the people nominated by the NMC and the nine part-time member-state medical councils was elected from the West Bengal, Karnataka, Nagaland, Chhattisgarh, Tripura, Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, Manipur and Uttarakhand.

Part -time posts on four autonomous boards were also filled through this process among the nominees of the Medical Council of Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, Haryana and Punjab.
Experts from Jammu and Kashmir were selected for the search committee who looks at the appropriate candidates for the posts of the chairperson and other members of the regulatory body.
The National Medical Commission consists of 33 members who have policies for medical education and ensure coordination between four autonomous boards. According to a former member, all changes in the course, minimum requirements to install various courses and policies at fees should go through this board.
Earlier this month, The Indian Express reported that the 33 -member commission did not meet last year from August or September.

In addition to the Commission, the regulatory bodies are composed of four autonomous boards, with five members with each president, two full-time members and two part-time members.
Graduation is responsible for developing the standards of medical education, courses for UG courses, frame policy guidelines for medical colleges and training of faculty members teaching UG courses. The PG Medical Education Board does the same for PG courses across the country.
The medical evaluation and rating board ensures that colleges follow the minimum requirements set by other boards and grant permissions to colleges to continue their courses, add seats or new courses.
Ethics and Medical Registration Board works to promote and regulate moral behavior among registered medical doctors and create a national medical register of all such professionals across the country.

Vacancies in the country’s top medical education regulatory bodies are serious implications for the overall functioning of medical education in India, especially to start new colleges, add seats or renew the existing seats.
