Amid protests against smart meters and 'excessive' bills, Tripura Power Agency asked India News to explain 'continuous underbilling'

Amidst the statewide protests against the allegations of smart meters and excessive electricity bills, Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) has noticed a demonstration to TDS Management Advisory Private Limited, alleging that it is alleged that they allege them of presenting average bills for consumers, which have functional meters, which cause harm to the corporation.

In a letter written to the Power Distribution Agency on Tuesday, RK Roy, DGM (Revenue), TSECL said that in the lost electrical subdivision, meter readers were presented average consumption data to many consumers who have functional meters capable of consumption.

The official further stated that comparative billing data “showed continuous underbilling, causing direct financial loss to Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL).

“The Act violates the contractual agreement and demonstrates gross negligence or deliberate misconduct by your meter readers, especially according to that particular area. According to the agreement, it is necessary: Record the actual meter reading from the functional meter without failure, unless avoiding the average billing supported by the valid justification (dosha/urgency), ensure that there is no action in the revenue.

“You are directed to show the cause within 7 (seven) days from the date of receipt of this notice, explaining why punitive action should not be taken against you under the provisions of the contract agreement. In case of failure, in case of failure, in case of failure to provide a satisfactory answer within the stipulated time, proper action will be taken without any other correspondence.”

Celebration offer

The state has recently seen protests by opposition political parties against the government’s decision to install smart electric meters and increase power tariffs.

Speaking during a protest, a Congress leader said, “Power tariffs have been increased without informing people. We strongly condemn it and demand the withdrawal of increase. Also, he has included a road of Rs 30 in the name of CNG and PNG. His party is opposing smart meters in West Bengal, but Tripura is in Tripura.”

The Trinmool Congress protested in front of the house of Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath, demanding that both the decisions be withdrawn. The TMC leader said, “We will continue our opposition until he takes them back.”

Increasing the same demand, CPM protested in front of Udaipur Bidoot Bhavan

Nath later said that consumers will be able to keep both meters -their current electronic meters and new smart meters. “If anyone can prove a mistake in the smart meter, the government will withdraw the decision to establish them,” he said.

“An attempt has been made to confuse people. Power tariffs and smart meters are two different things. In seven years (since 2018), power tariffs under the BJP government were increased by 24.9 percent, while under the CPM rule, tariff increased by 116.03 percent in seven years.”
