Party lines, 145 Lok Sabha MPs from ruling and opposition parties on Monday gave a notice to transfer a proposal to remove former Judge Justice Yashwant Verma of Delhi’s High Court, which is in the center of a line after a panel set up by the Supreme Court, which was discovered about his official residence that currency notes were discovered.
Among the signators of the proposal, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, BJP, Congress, TDP, JD (U), Janaasena Party, AGP, MPs related to party, AGP, Shiv Sena and CPI (M) were also signed on the petition. Other signators include BJP’s Anurag Thakur, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, PP Chaudhary, Supriya Sule of NekP (SP) and KC Venugopal of Congress.
According to the Judge Inquiry Act, 1968, the complaint against a judge is to be made through a resolution signed by at least 100 members if it has been started in the Lok Sabha and by 50 MPs in the Rajya Sabha.
Once MPs submit the proposal, the presiding officer of the House can either accept or reject it. If accepted, a three-member committee, including two judges and a jurist, will be formed to investigate the complaint and determine if it fit a case to initiate the process of impeachment.
