Questioning Vice President Jagdeep Dhikar “Shocking” announcementThe Congress on Monday night said that “he was more for his completely unexpected resignation than meeting his eyes”. The opposition party said that Dhankhar had set up a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee for Tuesday afternoon, and was to make “major announcements related to the judiciary”.

Congress Lok Sabha member Imran Masood asked “What happened in only one hour that he had to resign”. “We pray that Almighty gives him a long and healthy life. I can’t understand the reason for this,” Masood said.

RJD MP Sudhakar Singh said that Dhankhar used to “look healthy” while presiding over the action in the Rajya Sabha during the day. Singh said, “There is no truth on this. Within the BJP and the government, it is a time of constitutional crisis … I believe this is a political crisis. The truth will come out tomorrow. It does not seem to have a health reason. If he is unhealthy, we wish him all the best,” Singh said.

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram said that Dhankhar has resigned, citing “medical reasons”, and wished him good health and long life.

Rajya Sabha member Kapil Sibal said that he would not want to “speculate” to the reasons for the resignation. He said, “He has said that it is health for reasons. Therefore, I do not want to speculate. I could say that he was one of the most active Rajya Sabha presidents we have seen for years. He would always persuade members of the two sides to work together,” he said.

CPI MP P Sandosh Kumar said that Vikas was quite unexpected and “We do not know what are the reasons”. Kumar said, “I don’t think the Presidents of India will accept it. This may be an initial response from his side. He may be dissatisfied with some developments.”

The opposition has scored several runs in with Dhankhar in the past, often on his conduct as the President of Rajya Sabha. In his notice, the opposition had alleged that Dhankhar had taken himself to be the “indecent spokesperson” of government policies in public forums. He alleged that he was “clearly biased” and took the Rajya Sabha in “very biased ways”.

The opposition also accused him of disrupting his members on several occasions when he tried to speak.
