Global Passport Ranking 2025: India has recorded its biggest growth in the ranking of the world’s most powerful passport. In the latest quarterly update of the Henley Passport Index created by London -based global citizenship and residence firm Henley & Partners, India climbed eight places in 77th place, 85th last year,
The number of Indian passport holders can now increase from 57 to 57 with visa-free or visa-on-back.
Where can Indian passport holder travel visa-free?
Indian citizens can now travel to 59 destinations without the need to secure the visa in advance. Popular Asian tourists such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Maldives and Thailand are among the countries providing hotspot visa-free entry, while Macau, and Myanmar provides visa-on-arrival access.
The Philippines and Sri Lanka are two countries which have been added to the list of visa-free sites.
While the growth of only two additional countries may seem small, diplomatic importance is big: India have overtaken many neighbors in terms of freedom of travel and now sit ahead of countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh in the global mobility rankings.

Asia leads global mobility
The Asian nations dominate the top of the Henley Index: the number one place in Singapore, offering a visa-free visit to 193 destinations. Japan and South Korea are bound to the other, each has provided access to 190 countries.
Seven European countries – Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Spain – share third place with 189 destinations.

Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and Sweden share 4th positions, while New Zealand, Greece and Switzerland are tied to the 5th.
Australia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Malta and Poland are tied at number 7, while Canada, Estonia and United Arab Emirates are at number 8.
US, UK Loose Ground
Traditionally powerful passports have seen a gradual decline like the United States and the United Kingdom: Britain fell from 5th in January to 6th position with access to 186 destinations. The American passport has come to 10th position, offering admission to 182 destinations earlier this year, a drop from 9th.
The two countries first topped the Index, UK in 2015 and UK in 2014, but other nations have seen the impact by increasing their bilateral agreements and travel privileges.

Rising Stars: Saudi Arabia, China
Saudi Arabia took the biggest advantage in the latest updates, adding four new visa-free sites from January and now allowed to travel to 91 countries. China has climbed a notable 34 places since 2015-from 94th to 60th-although it still lacks visa-free access in the Schengen region in Europe.
At the bottom of the index, Afghanistan ranks at the last place in rank 99, providing a visa-free access to only 25 destinations to its citizens-a low in the beginning of the year. Syria ranks 98th with access to 27 countries, and Iraq ranks 97th, with only 30 destinations.
It makes a luxurious dynamic difference of 168 destination between the world’s most powerful and weakest passport, underlining the huge inequality in the freedom of global journey.
Why passport strength matters
CEO of Henley & Partners Dr. According to Jurg Stephen, today a passport exceeds a travel document – it reflects the diplomatic influence of a country, global integration and priorities of foreign policy.

Stephen said in a press release, “Your passport is no longer a travel document – it is a reflection of your country’s diplomatic influence and international relations. Increased inequality and growing geopolitical uncertainty, strategic dynamics and citizenship are more important than before in the era of the plan of strategic mobility and citizenship.”
He also noted the growing interest among American and British citizens in obtaining alternative citizenship, which cited residence-by-investment and increasing demand for other passport programs.
Henley Passport Index is a globally respected ranking of passport, who can travel in advance based on the number of their holders without obtaining visas. The Index is compiled using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and is updated in the quarter.
