Bullet Train in India: The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has started preparing a detailed project report (DPRS) to expand India’s bullet train network beyond Mumbai-Ahmedabad. NHSRCL is a joint venture (JV) between the Government of India and the participating state governments, which has been tasked to implement high-speed rail (HSR) projects across the country.
On Wednesday (July 23), in the written reply to the Lok Sabha, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav confirmed that the Ministry of Railways was actively working on a plan to expand the HSR network beyond the MAHSR corridor.
“To meet the growing passenger demand between the major cities of commercial/economic and tourism by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), a detailed project report (DPRS) is being prepared, to expand the HSR network in India beyond the MAHSR Corridor.”
The Union Minister further stated that HSR projects are highly capital intensive and any decision to take a new project is based on several factors such as technical feasibility, financial and economic viability, traffic demand and availability of money and financing options, etc.
The MAHSR project is done with technical cooperation and financial assistance from the Government of Japan.

Earlier, the National Rail Scheme mentions the following routes for future possible development for high speed rail networks:
- Delhi – Varanasi
- Delhi – Ahmedabad
- Mumbai – Nagpur
- Mumbai – Hyderabad
- Chennai – Mysore
- Delhi – Amritsar
- Varanasi – Howrah
Bullet train project closing date in India
The Ministry of Railways has targeted the completion of the entire MAHSR project by December 2029. “The Gujarat part of the corridor between VAPI and Sabarmati is planned to be completed by December 2027. The entire project (Maharashtra to Sabarmati Khand) is expected to be completed by December 2029,” the minister said.
