Public sector banks in India: Public sector banks (PSB), along with Indian Railways, are among the largest employers in the country. Each year, thousands of vacancies are announced for recruitment in various positions and designations in PSB. The recruitment process and the number of openings differ from the bank to the bank.
Currently, 12 public sector banks are in the country. These are – Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, Canara Bank, Central Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank, Punjab and Sindh Bank, Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India, UCO Bank and Union Bank of India.
How to recruit public sector bank employees
PSB is a board-government commercial institutions. Each PSB requires manpower requirement is determined by the concerned PSB, which includes business requirement, spreading activities, supernation and other unplanned exit, taking into account various factors.
In response to the Rajya Sabha on 22 July, Minister of State in Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary said: “Officers and employees are appointed by the PSB accordingly and it varies year -to -year based on their needs.”

The Union Minister said that by 31 March 2025, 96 percent of the posts of essential employees have been filled in accordance with commercial requirements. He said that the short ratio of interval is responsible for being caused by other general factors including supernation and unplanned exit. He further said that in the last five years, banks have hired 1,48,687 employees.

The Union Minister said, “During the last 5 years (FY 2020-25), banks have recruited 148687 employees and for FY 2025-26, 48570 employees are undergoing recruitment.”
Who are the top 10 public sector banks with most employees
According to data available for FY25, State Bank of India has the highest number of employees at 2,36,221. This is followed by Punjab National Bank with 1,02,746 employees; With Canara Bank 81,260, Union Bank of India with 73,945; Bank of Baroda with 73,742; India’s bank with 50,564; Indian bank with 39,778; Central bank of India with 33,081; UCO Bank with 21,049; And Indian Overseas Bank with 20,966 employees.
