Indian Railway Passenger Data: Indian Railways (IR) is one of the most favorite methods of transport in the country. In the last decade, the Ministry of Railways has taken several initiatives to increase connectivity, including – Wande India and Amrit Bharat launch modern trains, doubling of railway lines, construction of new tracks, and redevelopment of stations, others.
Earlier this week, Congress MP Imran Masood raised a question to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav about the number of passengers traveling by train since 2019.
In response, Vaishnav said that the train occupation is not the same throughout the year. He said that the passenger number is ups and down on the basis of lean and peak travel periods.
“On Indian Railways, the occupancy pattern of trains is not the same throughout the year, and it varies during the lean and peak period. During the peak rush period, the occupancy of trains, especially on the popular routes, remains completely on the routes, while during the lean period and on the less popular routes, the sub optimal use is,” Vaishnaw said.
How many passengers traveled by train in the last six years?
A total of 3349 crore passengers traveled in the Indian Railways (IR) during the last six years (ie 2019-20 to 2024-25), including 418 crore reserved and 2,931 crore unreserved square passengers (2020–21 and 2021-22 Kovid years).
Moving forward, Vaishnav said, “To fulfill the crowd during Durga Puja/Deepawali/Chhath, about 1.8 crore passengers were traveled to 7,990 special trains during the period from October 1, 2024 to 30 November, 2024.
With a view to facilitating passengers during the recently concluded Maha Kumbh, IR operated more than 17,300 trains during the period from January 13, 2025 to February 28, 2025, which served about 4.24 crore passengers. ,
