A new set of data from the Civil Registration System (CRS) suggests that in 2022, about 86.5 lakh deaths were recorded in the country, which is much lower than the peak of 2021, which saw a large spike in the deaths caused by the Kovid epidemic.
The new data released on Thursday night does not mention the level of registration of births and deaths in the country still, an important information that was made available in pre-political years. In 2019, about 92% of all deaths was registered, and this number was showing a growing trend. However, this number is missing in CRS data for years of epidemic.
Death registration data is now available for all three years of epidemic, and the number clearly shows that the official count of deaths caused by Covid-19 was a serious under-reporting of the actual situation. According to the official count, about 5.3 lakh people died due to Kovid -19 in India over a period of three years from 2020 to 2022.
CRS data for these years suggest that the actual number can be between 20 lakhs and 25 lakhs, or can be about four to five times more than the official count. However, in the absence of information about the ratio of registered deaths, a more realistic estimate of the deaths caused by Covid19 still remains elusive.
But now it is also clear that the estimates of many research studies, which were putting India’s Covid -19 death count at five to six million, or even more, was grossly exaggerated.

CRS-2022 also shows the opposite of trends in birth registration. The years 2020 and 2021 saw a decline in registration of births compared to 2019, a year before the epidemic. In 2019, 2.48 crore births were registered in the country, but this number increased to about 2.42 crores in 2020 and 2021. In the year 2022, more than 2.54 crore births were registered, maximum anytime. 86.5 lakh deaths registered in 2022 are also the highest number of registration for deaths, in addition to 2021. Previous data from 2007 to 2019 shows that every year about 83.5 lakh people in India die on an average on average. The actual number of deaths occurring during these years is different from 81.17 lakhs in 2017, up to 85.89 lakhs in 2012. During these years, the ratio of registered deaths increased from 69% to 92%. If it is believed that the deaths registered in India now closely explain the actual number of deaths, then 86.5 lakh deaths for 2022 do not seem to have a major deviation from the general limit. It can fall out of the upper limit of the range seen in the data from 2007 to 2019. This is contrary to data of 2021, when 1.02 crore deaths were recorded, and in the mid -2021, the effect of the second wave of epidemic was clearly reflected.
A separate set of data about the medical cause of deaths, released simultaneously, shows that in 2022 25,393 deaths were attributed to Covid-19. For 2021, this number was 4,13,580.

But a quarter of the deaths registered in India receive a medical certification.
