A defense spokesperson said in Natchi on Monday that a Singapore-Flagged container ship on the way to Navy Mumbai caught fire from the Kerala coast.
The defense spokesperson said in a statement that MV Wan Hai 503, known as 503, sent Colombo on 7 June and was slated to reach NPC Mumbai on 10 June. At around 10.30 pm on Monday, the Navy got a formation about the ship -riding fire.
The Navy spokesperson said, “INS Surat has been scheduled to enter Kochi for IST, diverted by WNC to 11 am T.
Official sources in Kerala’s State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) said the incident was 78 nautical miles away from Bapor coast in Kozhikode district.
“Twenty containers have fallen into the sea and several explosions on the ship. The ship had 22 crew members and 18 of them jumped into the sea with a rescue boat.

The SDMA said that if the injured crew members were being brought to Kerala, the district collectors of Kozhikode and Ernakulam would be asked to ensure treatment for the injured.
Wan Hai 503 was sailing at a speed of 14.4 knots and was expected to come to Mumbai on 10 June. The vessel (IMO 9294862, MMSI 563812000) is a container ship made in 2005 and sails under the Singapore flag.

The defense spokesperson said that out of 22 crew members left the ship on a boat. The crew members are being protected by Coast Guard and Indian Navy ships and aircraft. The vessel is on fire.
