Police sources said that the Sambalpur police of Odisha on Thursday arrested a state -run assistant professor of a state -run university on the false promise of marriage for entering sexual relations with a student.
On the basis of the complaint lodged by the victim, the professor has been arrested under Section 69 (physical relationship obtained through fraudulent means) of the Indian Justice.
Sources said that the complainant alleged that the accused entered a physical relationship with her after assurance of marriage. However, the accused later refused to fulfill the promise of marriage, the complaint claimed.
According to university sources, the victim has not filed a complaint with the institution’s internal grievance committee.
After his arrest, the university has suspended the accused professor and asked him not to leave the district headquarters with the approval of the authorities.

Police sources said the complainant alleged that the professor manipulated him emotionally to gain confidence, after which he entered a physical relationship with him with a false promise of marriage.
Sources said the complainant approached the police, when he came to know that the accused professor was doing the same with another student, the sources said.

The incident occurred after the death of a student of another major government college after a professor alleged his complaints on alleging sexual harassment by a professor.
