A total of 162 students were rescued on Sunday after being stranded overnight in the premises of his private residential school in Pandarasoli village of East Singhbham district of Jharkhand, flooding due to heavy rains.

The students and teachers spent the night on the roof of the school until the rescue operation started in the morning.

The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of Kovali police station in POTA block. Officials said that the students were trapped in the innovative residential school since Saturday night as waterlogging occurred in the low-hand complex due to rain.

Karna Satyarthi, Deputy Commissioner of East Singhbham, told The Indian Express that before the arrival of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, all children were safely rescued using boats and ropes on Sunday morning. “Local police and divers coordinated the rescue operation immediately, and no injuries. The children are safe,” he said.

Satyarthi said that two-three teachers were also present in the campus, but the primary concern of the administration was the protection of minor students.

With the monsoon intensifying in the rural belts of the district, now arrangements are being made to transfer from flood-affected areas, especially school children from flood-affected areas, such as Bahargora, Chakulia, Ghatshila, Dumariya and Godbananda. “We have offered rehabilitation options, and many families have already moved to government schools and community buildings, which are being used as temporary shelters,” said Satyarthi.

He appealed to the public to avoid moving to rivers or low-loud areas in the coming days, warning that the district is expected to be liberal for at least the next four days for moderate to heavy rains. “Today, we also had an incident in Dumariya block, where a young boy fell into the water while taking a selfie. It tried hard to save him. So, we urge people not to take risks near flood areas,” he said.
