The Odisha police on Monday detained seven people accused of raping a college student at Gopalpur Beach near Berhampur City, allegedly tied up a friend with whom he visited the popular tourist destination on Sunday evening.
According to police, the woman and her male friends were in a separate part of the beach when they were encountered by the accused persons. He then allegedly controlled the friend and pulled her away from the woman, after which they gang -raped her.
A case was registered on Monday on the basis of a complaint filed by the court of rape. The case was registered under the Joint Code of India (BNS) Section 70, which is related to the crime of gangrape.
Officials said that the police have formed a special team to intensify the investigation and arrest all the people responsible for the crime. A police team has already visited the scene of the crime.
“The victim is a college student from a nearby district and was living on a private dirt in Berhampur. She went to the beach with a male friend who is also her classmate. They both sat in a separate place on the beach. A group of 10 people, who were sitting on the beach, approached the couple,” a senior police officer said.
The official said that while some accused persons allegedly dragged the woman’s friend far and tied her, others turned to rape her.
Berhampur Superintendent of Police Saravana Vivek M confirmed that a case was registered and seven people were detained. “We are interrogating the accused persons. They will be arrested soon,” the SP said.

Police said medical tests would be conducted on Tuesday as part of the investigation.
