The appointment of Pakistan for major per-objections bodies at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC)-Chairman of the Ban Committee against Taliban, the vice-president of the terrorism panel formed after 9/11, and the United Nations sanctions have left several red faces in a work group-in New Delhi under the rule of sanctions of the United Nations.
According to sources, there is a “sense of disqualified” and “restlessness” in the South block, as it is contrary to India’s efforts to portray Pakistan as the subclass of terrorism – the Pahalgam terrorist attack on 22 April, exactly a month after the attack, after which Operation Sindhor led four days of military tour between India and Pakistan.
Last month, India sent multi-faceted delegations to various foreign capitals, including all current and upcoming members of UNSC, in an attempt to rally for their war against terror from Pakistan.
Sources said that Pakistan was appointed to these major panels on 29 May, but the matter was made public in the last few days, while Indian teams were visiting these countries. An Indian delegation led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor visited New York last month, and is again involved with the US Congress, think tank and media at Washington DC.
The appointment of these panels should consent to both permanent and non-established members of the UNSC. The development indication is that Pakistan has been able to find its way with the help of China and other members of UNSC.

Significantly, a high -level Pakistani parliamentary delegation led by Senate President and former Pakistan PM Yusuf Raza Gilani concluded the UN headquarters in New York earlier this week. The delegation held a series of meetings from various member states from various member states along with senior United Nations officials and diplomats.
Pakistan has also sent a high-level multi-party political delegation for New York, Washington DC, London, Brussels and Moscow, headed by its former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zerrardari to support Canvas in its favor.

Islamabad will now preside over the UNSC committee established under the resolution 1988 (2011), which oversees the implementation of sanctions against the Taliban. It is also named Vice Chair of the Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC), which monitors the implementation of 1373 (2001), a main component of the United Nations’s global counter-elevated architecture.
Additionally, Pakistan will serve as co-chairman of two important assistant bodies: informal work group on documentation and newly formed work group on restrictions. The documentation group works to enhance the transparency, efficiency and inclusion of the UNSC, while the restriction group is tasked with evaluating and improving the structure and effectiveness of the United Nations restrictions.
With the appointment to these major UNSC counter-terrker panels of Pakistan, sources said that Islamabad is a “real risk”, which is trying to project India as a source of terrorism, especially in Balochistan. The Counter-Terror Committee may ask for a report on terrorist activities in Balochistan.
While this is a matter of concern for Delhi, sources said that Algeria is the chairman of the committee, while France and Russia are also vice -presidents with Pakistan. “So we have some checks, through our friends and strategic partners, trying to keep Pakistan’s tricks under investigation,” sources said.

India’s Taliban Ban Committee also has friends, where Guyana and Russia are vice -presidents. Greece is as co-chairman in the group working on restrictions. This is important because India is trying to approve many Pakistan-based terrorists, while Beijing and Islamabad are blocking such steps.
New Delhi is hoping that these co-president and vice-chairs will act as a counter-balance and counter-weight to prevent Pakistan’s anti-India campaign.
Sources said the most important anti-terrorism committee under UNSC Resolution 1267, however, is the president of Denmark and co-heads of Russia and Sierra Leone. Earlier, India presided over the UNSC 1267 ISIL and Al-Qaeda Ban Committee in 2022, which was responsible for monitoring and implementation of restrictions against individuals and institutions associated with two organizations.
