Nine people have been detained after a mob, forcibly shaved the heads of two Dalit men and forced them to crawl on allegations of cow smuggling in Ganjam district of Odisha.
According to the police, the victims had bought a cow and two calves and were returning home, when a mob accused them under the limits of the Dharkot police in Kharigumma village and demanded Rs 30,000. When the men expressed their inability to pay, the mob allegedly beat them, forcibly shaved their heads, crawled them and drank sewage water. A video allegedly shows two people crawling with grass between their teeth because some men follow them.
Police said the group snatched cash of Rs 700 from him and his mobile phone.
Inspector of Dharkote police station, Chandrika Swain said, “A case has been registered on the basis of the complaint of the victims. Appropriate action will be taken as per the law.”
The victims were treated at a local hospital.
Significantly, last year has seen an increase in the number of cow vigilant cases.
