E-Passport in India 2025: In the 13th Passport Seva Day, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar revealed significant development in the Passport Seva Program (PSP) and confirmed the national adoption of e-Paisports.

In a post on X, Jaishankar praised passport officials in both India and abroad, keeping in mind their contribution described as “remarkable changes” in the last decade.

The Passport Seva Program (PSP) version 2.0 was launched as part of a pilot program in India. Regional passport offices in Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, Jammu, Goa, Shimla, Raipur, Amritsar, Jaipur, Chennai, Hyderabad, Surat and Ranchi are now equipped to issue e-Passports, with further expansion plans.

The minister announced the nationwide start of the Passport Seva Program Edition 2.0, which includes advanced and emerging technologies that will increase system efficiency and transparency.

E-Passports in India: What is e-Passport?

An Indian Epseport will be a paper and electronic passport that includes an antenna implanted in a radio frequency identification (RFID) chip and passport in fact and has a personal and biometric information of the passport holder. It will be immediately recognized as a symbol of a small supplement gold colored printed under the front cover of the passport.

E-passports in India: Why is e-passport beneficial?

The main advantage of EPASSPORT is the increased ability to protect the integrity of the data of the passport holder. It will have digitally signed data in the electronic chip, along with the data printed on the booklet, which can be safely certified by immigration officers, for fake and possible fraud activities such as fake passports, while confirming its authenticity in boundary control.

The cost of e-passport is expected to be the same as a common Indian passport.

E-Passports in India: How to apply for e-Passport?

To get an e-passport, one can visit the official passport service platform and follow the steps given below:

step 1: Go to the official passport service website: https://seervices1.passportindia.gov.in/psp,

step 2: New users must sign up for an account, and existing users can log in using their credentials.

step 3: Fill the e-Paidport application by providing accurate personal and travel information.

step 4: Now choose the nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) as per your convenience.

Step 5: Payment of applicable fees, which is e-priest fee, is to be made through available payment options.

Step 6: Schedule for an appointment by selecting the date and time slot for the selected service center.

Step 7: For biometric capture and document verification go to PSK or Popsk at the scheduled time.

E-Passports in India: Is it mandatory for the existing valid passport holders to replace with an e-passport?
