Sukhanshu Shukla, who became the first Indian to reach the International Space Station (ISS), is now depicted with his amazing words about the Earth from space in the textbook of newly released NCERT Class 5 Environmental Studies.

Shukla, who completed the 18-day mission in the ISS on 15 July, told how Earth visible from space.

“After seeing the Earth from outside, the first idea that came to mind was that the Earth looks completely one; no limit appears from outside. It seems that no limit is present, no state exists, no country is present. This quote was part of his conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and now its purpose is to inspire the young minds to think beyond the boundaries and embrace unity.

Group Captain Shukla, a 39-year-old Indian Air Force officer and Test Pilot, completed their first space trip as part of the Axiom-4 mission, a commercial spaceflight supported by ISRO and NASA, and is operated by Axiom Space.

The visit marked a milestone for India: Shukla is the first Indian to step into another Indian only after Rakesh Sharma’s prestigious flight in 1984.

Born on October 10, 1985, a year after-Shukla grew up in Lucknow in a middle class family, a year after the spaceflight, which had no direct connection for aviation or space. But an aircraft’s childhood journey lit a spark.

After several sites, Shukla finally launched from the Kennedy Space Center on 25 June, the crew of SpaceX over a Falcon 9 rocket in the dragon spacecraft.

Ten minutes in the mission, the Dragon Capsule entered the classroom, inspired to declare Shukla in Hindi, “Kamal’s ride was” (“It was a great ride”) and shared his spirit of national pride.

Shukla returned after spending an 18-day stay at the international space station.

The National Education Policy is part of a new integrated approach to learning the textbook, science, social science and environmental studies developed under the structure of 2020. Part of The World Around US Series, the book aims to cultivate observation, moral logic and environmental awareness among young learners.

With Shukla’s reflections, the textbook introduced new systems such as a digital address identifier for the exact location mapping. It also includes content on oral health protection, microbial life, flood preparation and food protection techniques.
