EC appointed Rajya Sabha General Secretary PC Modi as returning officer

Taking the next step to hold elections for the post of Vice President, the Election Commission (EC) on Friday appointed Rajya Sabha General Secretary PC Modi as Returning Officer (RO) and two secretariat officers of the Upper House as Assistant ROS.

A Gazette notification will be issued on Friday to this effect. Garima Jain, Joint Secretary, and Vijay Kumar are the Director, Assistant ROS, the pole panel said.

The post of Vice President was vacated by Jagdeep Dhikar on Monday, who resigned mid -term, citing mid -term on the basis of health. However, sources aware of the development said that his decision to accept an opposition pace for impeachment of judicial Yashwant Verma in the Rajya Sabha had wrongly rubbed the government on Monday.

In a statement on Friday, the pole panel states: “According to the conference, either General Secretary, Lok Sabha or General Secretary, Rajya Sabha is appointed as a returning officer by rotation. During the last vice -president election, the General Secretary of the Lok Sabha was appointed as the Returning Officer. 2025 as the Returning Officer for the Vice Presidential election.”

The EC said that it appointed officers under Section 3 of the President and Vice President Election Act, 1952. As per the Act, the EC has a 30 to 32-day timeline to operate the pole after informing the schedule, including 14 days to file nominations, one day for investigation, and two days for return of candidature. If the election election is contested, voting should be held at least 15 days after the date of withdrawal of candidature.

The Electoral College for the VP election consists of MPs from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, including enrolled members. Voting is done through a secret voting in Parliament. The votes of all MPs take the same price.
