First phase of census with housewife operations to start from April 1, 2026. Bharat News

The housewife operations for the upcoming census will begin on April 1, 2026, which the Registrar General of India has stated that marking the beginning of the first phase of Dickenial Exercise.

In a letter to the Chief Secretaries of the States and Center areas, the Census Commissioner and the Registrar General of India, Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan said that the housewife operations and housing census will begin on April 1, 2026.

Earlier, work distribution between supervisors, enumerators and them will be appointed with cooperation from the states and district administration.

The census is a two-step exercise-in an IE hoselisting operation (HL), the habitat, property and facilities of each house will be collected.

Subsequently, in the second phase, IE population census (PE), demographic, socio-economic, cultural and other details of each individual of each person will be collected for 1 February 2027, according to the letter.

In the census, caste will also be calculated, a government statement said.

For census activities, more than 34 lakh couteters and supervisors and about 1.3 lakh census officials will be deployed.

It is the 16th census ever and is the eighth after independence.

The upcoming census will be organized through digital means using mobile applications. Provision of self-reversal will also be made available to people.

The office of the Registrar General and the Census Commissioner had prepared about three dozen questions asked by the citizens.

Survey will ask homes about the ownership of items such as phone, internet, vehicle (bicycle, scooter, motorcycle, car, jeep, van), and equipment (radio, TV, transistor).

Citizens will also be asked about grain consumption, drinking water and lighting sources, types and toilets access to toilets, waste water disposal, bathing and kitchen facilities, cooking and fuel used for LPG/PNG connections.

Additional questions include floors, walls and roof of the house, its status, number, number of residents, number of rooms, presence of married couples, and whether the domestic head is a woman or material used for a scheduled caste or tribe.
