Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi took over as the new Assam Congress President on Tuesday.
The MP, who represents Jorhat in Parliament, and is also the Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, was appointed as the head of the party’s Assam unit last week.
Gogoi, who has recently been in the line of the fire of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, took the Congress baton in the state from Bhupan Kumar Borah in the 2026 assembly elections. Borah led the Assam Pradesh Congress for almost four years.
Since February, Sarma Gogoi has been accusing Gogoi of maintaining relations with Pakistan’s Steering Agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
Last Wednesday, Assam Congress President, a few days after being appointed as Gogoi Answers to allegations about his visit to PakistanSaying that he went there in 2013 and it was related to his wife’s professional work.

Speaking to the media at the Congress office in Delhi, Gogoi said, “About 14-15 years ago, my wife, a famous public policy expert, worked on an international project in South Asia, focusing on climate change. He spent a year in Pakistan before returning to India around 2012-13 … He worked in India in 2015.”
“Around 2013, I remember to go with her once. The subject is being used by the ruling party to discredit me. This is because their daily bread is defaming someone. With this subject, they are making a C-grade cinema, which they have announced to release on 10 September. It is going to prove to be a flop.
