The Tripura government has provided jobs to 18 people, whose family members were killed in political violence in the state before 2018, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath said in Agartala on Saturday.
The minister said that 39 petitions were submitted to the inquiry committee, and 18 people were offered jobs in various departments. The Nath is the chairman of the inquiry committee, including Law Secretary, Secretary of Information and Cultural Affairs, Inspector General of Police and Additional Secretary of Home Department.
“Another meeting of the committee was held on June 19. We received eight more petitions, and five names were recommended. We are reviewing the remaining petitions,” the minister asked reporters at the Civil Secretariat.
“We give proper respect for democracy. We feel that it is our moral duty to support family members of those killed in political violence. Our government has not shown any discrimination on the basis of political affiliation in this matter,” he said.
The BJP-led coalition government first came to power in the state in 2018, ignoring the East-CPI (M) -T Front Government, which ruled the kingdom for 25 consecutive years.
Criticizing the previous government, Nath said, “Many political murders took place before 2018 during the first government’s tenure. Murders and political violence are not healthy for democracy. If this happens, it is a failure and embarrassment for the government for shame”.
However, he could not give an accurate figure of political murders, which happened before 2018. The petitions received are of various years such as 1983, 1987, 1990, 1994, 1995, 1998,1981, 2015, 2016, 2017.

Nath said that those who want to apply under the scheme, should collect forms from the offices of sub-division magistrates. These applications will be assessed by the committee on the basis of shared input by District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police. “If the names are approved by the committee, it will be sent to the Finance Department, and on the basis of vacancies in various departments, they will be given a job,” he said.
