'Greater Aarartala' master plan is almost ready; Mayor Deepak Mazumar says that the document will help in finalizing the metro routes. Bharat News

Aarartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) announced on Friday that it would develop ‘Greater Aarartala’, which would include 51 wards and 49 gram panchayats of the civic body.

Talking to reporters after an official meeting, Agartala Mayor Deepak Mazumar said that the master plan was almost ready to expand the city. He said that the concept of ‘Greater Agartla’ was being prepared keeping in mind the needs of the city for the next 20 years.

“There was no master plan for Agartala City in the past. The first master plan was being developed after being formed by the BJP -led government in the state. The first step in that direction was completed today. It will help finalize the routes to metro services, overbridge sites, roads, or appropriate sites.

The present agarla city was founded in 1838 by the then emperor Maharaja Krishna Kishore Manikya Bahadur. The municipality was formed in 1871 under Maharaja Chandra Manikya, with AWB Power, who was the British political agent for the hill tipper, who was appointed as the chairman.

In 2004, during the tenure of former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, the last major expansion of Agartala municipal area was done when the civic limit increased from 16.012 sq km to 62.02 sq km.
