Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Thursday asked the Karnataka government’s “historic” move to promote an ordinance, which aims to protect the rights of platform-based golds workers in the state.

In a post on X, Gandhi said, “Our Congress government in Karnataka has taken a historic step by issuing an ordinance that guarantees rights, dignity and security to Gig workers.”

He said, “These workers bring us food, give us the necessary things, and drive us safely – in heat, cold and rain. Still, they are blocked by their apps without clarification, deprived of sick leave, and paid according to opaque algorithms. We are changing it,” we said.

The ordinance also proposes The establishment of a welfare board and the construction of a dedicated welfare fund for gig workers, which will partially funded from 5 percent cess collected from companies.

Gandhi also recalled his conversation with gig workers during the Bharat Joko Yatra. Sharing his feelings, he said, “Rating Nahi, Haq Khane Hai Hai Hai Hum, Ghulam Nahi.”

“These powerful words of Gig workers lived with me during the India Jigsko Yatra.”

Giving assurance of security to the workers in the state, Gandhi said that the new ordinance ensures all the measures required for the welfare of the workers:

✅ Social security
✅ fair contracts
✅ Transparency in algorithm pay
✅ End of arbitrary blocking

He also appreciated the same step in Rajasthan, saying that Telangana will soon follow its footsteps. “How technology should serve people – innovation and justice driving. Rajasthan showed the way. Karnataka has acted. Telangana is ahead.”

The opposition leader said that platforms are creating opportunities for Gig workers and re -shaping work relationships. Therefore, the rights of workers should be at the center of this new system.

“This is our vision – and we will take it to every state and nation,” Gandhi reiterated that he concluded his position.

The ordinance also makes platforms compulsory to pay the welfare fee of a gig workers, which is set from 1 percent to 5 percent of the payment per transaction, which will be used to support social security benefits such as unemployment, disease, maternity, or work -related injuries.

The decision to establish the board was taken last month during a high level meeting with Rahul Gandhi, CM Siddaramaiah, Labor Minister Santosh Lad. The meeting focused on implementing the Gig Workers Welfare Act – an important promise from the Congress Party’s Bharat Jaco Yatra and Election Campaign.
