'I was not sure I would come back': 'Despite the case in the Supreme Court,' I was pushed into Bangladesh ', Assam Man has returned home on time for Eid

Two weeks after his house was detained and allegedly pushed into Bangladesh by security forces, 51 -year -old Khairul Islam celebrated Eid with his family in Morigon district of Assam after bringing back his family and handing over to his family.

He said, “There are no words for thoughts passing through my head during those two days that I was in Bangladesh. I was afraid, I was not sure if I would ever be able to return to my family,” he told the Indian Express while speaking from his home.

Islam, primary teacher of a former government school, was declared a foreigner in 2016 by a tribunal of an foreigner. As reported by The Indian Express, his special holiday petition against the FT order was submitted by the Supreme Court in December 2024, despite he was detained by the police on 23 May, which was an ongoing crack against foreigners declared in Assam.

On 27 May, a video uploaded by Khairul Islam’s Bangladeshi journalist on social media was the first indication that the announced foreigners were being pushed to the international border in the country.

In the video, who reportedly shown Islam in Kurigram district of Bangladesh, it can be heard saying that on May 23, he was taken by the police from his home in the Matia Transit Camp – the dedicated dedicated center dedicated to “illegal foreigners” in Assam – and he was put in a bus with his hands and on 27 May, he was pushed with 13 others.

Celebration offer

A few days later, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that the government was overtaking foreigners on February 4, citing an order of the Supreme Court. However, Sarma also said that people with pending appeals before the Gauhati High Court or the Supreme Court are “not getting upset.”

“My wife got stuck in No-Man’s land, watched my video. At the same time, CM also said that people with cases in the High Court and Supreme Court cannot be raised. Because I have a Supreme Court case, he made an appeal to the limit branch of the Superintendent of Police and tried to bring it back in a few days.

He recalled that day that his video was taken: “After the security forces took us to the border and pushed us to Bangladesh, there was nowhere to go to us. The border guard Bangladesh (BGB) pushed us away and sent us back to the zero line or no-man’s land. I was unable to talk with 13 people.

Islam has now been struggling with its citizenship case for a decade and spent two years in Tezpur Central Jail after the Gauhati High Court upheld the FT order in 2018.

“I sincerely hope that I will be given justice by the Supreme Court when the time comes. For now, I am happy that I am with my family today,” he said.
