India news warns of protest against liquor shops in Mirwaiz J&K

The decision to open liquor shops in some areas of the Government of Jammu and Kashmir, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, president of the Hurrit Sammelan, warned on Friday that the step could protest.

Speaking at the Jamia Mosque, he said, “I want to attract the attention of people and officials to a very serious and disturbing development. A notice by Batamalu traders and business community for public information states that they are closing shops for three days for the inauguration of liquor shops in the area.”

In order to take immediate action by the authorities, Mirwaiz said that the inauguration of new liquor shops is “completely unacceptable” for the people of Kashmir.

“This is an attack on our religious, cultural and social ethos and is a complete disregard for it – a deliberate effort to ruin our people and our future generations. He said that officials know that J&K has a Muslim majority population, alcohol consumption is “against the principles of Islam” and is still being promoted.

He said, “It is their duty to ensure that such proposals are immersed in the bud. If they fail, the Ulema (religious officer), civil society and generally people would have no option but to protest and come out against this attack,” he said.
