West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday raised the alarm on the demolition of the ancestral home of the legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray in Dhaka by Bangladeshi officials. The century old building located on Horikishore Ray Chaudhary Road, once Ray’s grandfather, Upendra Kishore Ray Chaudhary, a popular person in Bengali literature and a Bengal Renaissance movement.
Citing local media reports, Banerjee said that the demolition work on the historical structure has already started.
“This news is extremely disturbing. The Ray family is one of the most important carriers and carriers of Bengali culture. Upendra Kishore is a pillar of the Renaissance of Bengal. Therefore, I believe this house is associated with the cultural history of Bengal,” Bangli said in a post on X (East Twitter).

Soon after, the Government of India issued a statement expressing “deep regrets” on the demolition of the house and proposed to cooperate with Bangladesh in restoring and preserving it.
“We note that Mayimen Singh of Bangladesh, the ancestral property of famous filmmaker and litteor Satyajit Ray in Bangladesh, is being demolished by Upendra Kishore Ray Chaudhary,” Ministry of External Affairs (Mea).

“Given the historical status of the building, the bungalow is a symbol of cultural renaissance, it would be better to rethink the demolition and reconstruction options for its repair and reconstruction as a symbol of the museum of literature and the shared culture of India and Bangladesh,” he said.
“The Government of India will be ready to expand cooperation for this purpose.”
