The difference in daily per capita calorie intake between 5 percent of consumers above and below India was narrowed in 2023-24, in the past, eating less calories and later increased. In 2023-24, the top 5 percent in the urban areas of Indians, as measured by their monthly per capita consumption expenses (MPCE), consumed 3,092 kiloclies (KCAL) per day, 82.3 percent more than 1,696 kcal more than 5 percent, according to the latest consumer survey of the Ministry of Statistics. In 2022-23, the difference was 114.3 percent.

In rural India, the top 5 percent of the daily calorie intake was 2,941 kcal, below, 5 percent was 74.2 percent more than 1,688 kcal of 5 percent. In 2022-23, the difference was 93.9 percent.

“The difference between the lower fractel class (5 percent of the population ranked by per capita expenditure level) and the top 5 percent of the per capita in the calorie intake (top 5 percent of per capita expense level) as well as in the consumer unit calories in the consumer unit calorie intake, has become significantly compressed in rural as well as urban India.”

Overall, in 2023-24, daily consumption of daily calorie in rural India was below 2022-23 to 0.9 percent from 2022-23, while in urban areas, urban areas were 0.4 percent less than 2,240 kcal.

Compared to 2011–12, the consumption of daily per capita calorie in urban areas was 1.5 percent higher in 2023-24, although it was 0.9 percent less in rural areas. However, Mospi warned that HCE made in 2022–23 and 2023-24 had made some changes compared to previous people, with an increase in the number of goods covered from 347 to 405 in 2011-12, changes in questionnaires, several trips for data collection, and household interviews were being taken from pen-and-papers. Mospei stated that these changes should be taken into account by comparing the results of 2022–23 and 2023-24 HCE with previous surveys.

In both rural and urban areas, the narrowness of intervals in daily per capita calorie intake between the top and bottom of 5 percent was mainly the result of the top 5 percent consumption and an increase in 5 percent intake below. According to MOSPI data, the calorie intake of top 5 percent of Indians in urban areas fell to 11.1 percent in 2022-23 in 2023-24. The top 5 percent calorie intake in rural areas was 5.6 percent.

Meanwhile, below 5 percent saw an increase of 5 percent in rural areas and 4.5 percent in urban areas in their daily calorie intake.

Interestingly, Indians in urban areas reduced the daily consumption of fat in 2023-24 from 70.5 grams to 69.8 grams (GM) in 2022-23, while in rural areas they increased it from 59.7 grams to 60.4 grams.

Meanwhile, protein intake was largely stable. In rural areas, daily intake of daily protein in 2023-24 was 61.8 grams in 2022-23 as against 61.9 grams. Consumption was more at 63.4 grams in urban areas, modest in 2022-23 than 63.2 grams.

It departs from the position of 2011-12, when the daily per capita protein intake was slightly higher in rural India than urban. In 2011-12, the average daily protein intake was 60.3 grams in urban areas and 60.7 grams in rural areas.

Meanwhile, there is a lot of increase in fat intake. In 2011-12, the daily per capita fat intake in rural areas was 46.1 grams, which increased by 31 percent to 60.4 grams in 2023-24. In urban India, the increase in fat intake was less than 58 grams to 69.8 grams to 20.3 percent.
