J&K cabinet sub -committee report on reservation tables. Bharat News

The Cabinet Sub-Committee on Wednesday made a report in the cabinet on issues related to reservation in Jammu and Kashmir. Sources in the government said that the report will now be sent to the Law Department. The Indian Express,

On June 10, Seekena Itu, Minister of J&C and members of the sub-committee announced that the report related to reservation was prepared and will be submitted to the cabinet. It came a day earlier when the six -month deadline was agreed by the government and the students demanded the rationalism of reservation in education and employment in the state earlier this year.

Lieutenant Governor LED launched by UT administration in April last year, amending UT’s Reservation Policy 2005 J&K Rule 4 of the Reservation Act, which increased the reservation from 43 percent to 67 percent to increase reservation for reserved category in the state, with 3 percent horizontal reservation for ex -servicemen. This means that only 33 percent left for the general category of candidates – a change that has been opposed by various political parties as well as students.

‘Open merit’ or general category student groups have been demanding rationalization of this reservation for more than a year. It was also one of the first challenges faced by the elected government in Jammu and Kashmir. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met in December 2024 with students protesting outside their residence. The protesters also included Srinagar MP Agha Ruhullah Mehdi and PDP leader Wahid Para.

In April this year, reservation of the Union sector in an affidavit “Defending” of J&K government in J&K High Court increased a political line. Three months after the establishment of a sub-committee to investigate the controversial 67 percent reservation of UT, the government has asked HC to dismiss the policy challenging the policy.

When the opposition parties once trained their guns on the ruling National Conference government to defend the protest policy, later went into damage control mode, calling their own affidavits “Gol Mol (unclear)”.

In a post on June 10, PDP’s Pulwama MLA Wahid Para called reservation “Embarrels on merit”, saying: “The only area in the country where the youth are punished for meritorious, it is sad that Jammu and Kashmir is important to move downwards for reservation.

On May 28, in a similar post on X, the People’s Conference Chief and Handwara MLA Sajad Lone expressed lack of hope from the Cabinet Sub-Committee and through this issue, the government accused the government of being more concerned with “electoral arithmetic compared to social uplift or merit”.

“Here in J&K, reservation is not a stand-alone social tool in totality. It is also a political device as well; it is also an anti-counter-device. Planners and criminals are looking for a new general in society and reservation is their magical reset button.
