Namibia will roll out India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) later this year, taking an important step in increasing digital cooperation between the two countries. The announcement was made on Wednesday with the aim of promoting bilateral relations between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Namibia President Netumbo Nandi-Naditwah.
The Modi-Naditwa meeting focused on increasing cooperation in major areas such as digital technology, defense, security, agriculture, healthcare, education and important minerals. The UPI Rollout stems from a technology licensing agreement which is signed between India’s National Payment Corporation (NPCI) and Bank of Namibia in April last year.
During bilateral discussions, India and Namibia signed several MoUs, which included the establishment of an entrepreneurship development center in Namibia and the other for cooperation in the field of health and medicine.
Namibia has also joined the two major Indo-supported global initiatives-coalition for distrust residence Infrastructure (CDRI) and Global Biofuel Alliance. The CDRI focuses on improving infrastructure flexibility to climate and disaster -related risks, and involves participation from national governments, international organizations and private sector.
