Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday reiterated that India will only sign trade agreements that ensure mutual profit and maintain national interest.

Speaking to reporters, Goyal said, “The talks are going on, the FTA (Free Trade Agreement) is only beneficial for both sides … It should be a win-win agreement.” He said that trade deals should align with India’s long -term priorities, saying that “national interests will always be supreme.”

When asked about the trade agreement with the United States, the minister further clarified India’s position: “India discusses its terms, discussion with various countries. Is it going on for agreements with many countries.”

“When this deal is done by protecting India’s interests, it is always ready to deal with developed countries keeping in mind that national interest will always be paramount.”

When we questioned the time limit of 26 percent tariffs on the July 9, Goyal said: “India never makes a trade deal on a time -line basis; when the deal is good, completely mature, and in the national interest, we accept it.”
