The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Thursday took a media report on the death of an auto rickshaw driver in Hyderabad, allegedly subjected to “physical torture” by the police, and sought a detailed report of the Telangana Director General of Police.

The alleged incident took place on 13 May at Rajendranagar police station in Hyderabad. A few hours after the death of auto rickshaw driver Mohammad Irfan, he died a few hours after he was called to a police station for counseling in a matrimonial dispute, alleging that he was subjected to police cruelty. Police said that he died of cardiac arrest.

The NHRC stated that the media reports, “If true, increase the serious violation of the victim’s human rights”, and issued a notice to the Director General of Police, Telangana, “calling for a detailed report in the case within two weeks”.

“According to media reports, on May 14, 2025, the victim had some issues with his wife, who took her to the police station to resolve the issue. After counseling the couple, the man was taken to a room, where he was beaten badly by the policemen with a rubber belt. When he came out of the police station, he said in a press.

Speaking to indianexpress.com, CH Srinivas, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rajendranagar Zone) denied allegations of police excesses and cited CCTV visuals to suggested it.

According to police, Irfan was called to Rajendranagar police station for counseling after his wife Nishad Begum, alleging that he was in an additional relationship with another woman.

DCP Srinivas said, “After a quarrel, both Irfan and the woman were brought to the police station around 9 pm by their family members for counseling. Later, Irfan allegedly fell suddenly and fainted while returning home.
