Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday tried to reduce the apprehension on China’s move to build the world’s largest dam on the Brahmaputra and said that he does not make any immediate reason for concern as the river receives most of its water from Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh.

Talking to reporters on the edge of a function here, Sarma said that the exact influence of the dam on a large scale, which was started last week, is not known properly as various principles are being deployed, and hope that the Center should be in touch with China on the matter.

China formally started construction of USD 167.8 billion on Saturday Above the Brahmaputra River in Tibet, close to the border with India in Arunachal Pradesh.

Sarma told reporters here, “I am not immediately worried because Brahmaputra is a powerful river and it is not dependent on the same source (of water).”

Asked about the potential downstream effect of the dam on Assam, he said it is not yet known whether it would be good or bad.

He said, “Brahmaputra gets most of its water from Bhutan, Arunachal Pradesh and rain water and other forms of water from our state.”

The CM further said that two scientific views about the dam by China swims.

“First – if the flow of Brahmaputra is disturbed by China, there may be less water and the resulting biodiversity will be affected. But there is a counter scene that if less water comes, this flood will also serve as cushioning. So, I don’t know which is right,” he said.

Sarma said that the Center is a better judge on this subject and it will call on it.

He said, “I am sure that they (center) must be discussing with China or will discuss with the neighboring country.”
